NATIVE AMERICAN FESTIVAL MAY 2 MAY 26 2019
The annual Native American Festival will be held on May 25-26, 2019 at the Museum of Ojibwa Culture in St. Ignace, Michigan.
It is a day to recognize and celebrate the rich culture and contributions of the Anishinaabe people from the area. At its idyllic location close to the shores of Lake Huron, the festival shines with amazing energy, pride and excitement in the drummers, dancers, workshop presenters, visitors and supporters who attend the festival each year.
The Festival is committed to focusing on the creative and traditional spirit of the Anishinaabe people and helping to preserve and revitalize their arts and culture, while inspiring them to take pride in their heritage and community.
Celebrating a heritage that is rich in diversity and creativity, St. Ignace’s Annual Native American Festival promises to be a thrill for the senses on May 25 and 26, 2019
Hear the sounds of drums, see the expressive dances, and taste the traditions that were literally hundreds of years in the making – all at this one incredible event. The smell of sacred medicines and the feel of birch bark, porcupine quills and other materials used for both function and artistry are also part of the experience. The event is held on the grounds of the Museum of Ojibwa Culture and festival activities are free to all visitors.

WORKSHOPS AND DEMONSTRATIONS: 10 A.M. – 12:30P.M.
Hoop Dancing Teachings and Demonstration Workshop: for Children and Youth, (adults welcome);
Shane Flamand, Internationally known Hoop Dancer, Sudbury Ontario
Dreamcatcher Class Workshop: Learn how to make willow dream-catchers from start to finish in this
workshop. Teresa Flamand
Black Ash Basket Demonstration Workshop: Come and experience a demonstration workshop with
traditional basket maker, Marge Bekins
Quill Work Demonstration Workshop: Sally Paquin an accomplished quill basket maker will
demonstrate the artistry of porcupine quill work.
Traditional Medicine Teachings: Learn about the importance and relationship of the four sacred
medicines, sweet grass, sage, tobacco and cedar to Indigenous culture. Lisa Burnside
Traditional Teachings and Story Telling in the Long House: John Causley 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 P.M.
Grandmother Moon Drummers and Singers 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Guided Tours: museum and museum grounds with a cultural interpreter-11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Traditional Drumming and Dancing: Grand Entry beginning at 1:00 p.m. Guest dancer, Shane
Flamand, Internationally known Hoop Dancer.
Traditional Feast: 5:30 p.m. (free for participants, must have a participant ticket): $11.00 for nonparticipants.
